How Do Dentures Work?

Dentures are removable appliances that are placed on top of the gum line. These appliances contain artificial teeth and are secured in the mouth with either adhesive creams, by attaching to remaining teeth or by attaching to implants secured in the jaw bone.

When a patient is in need of dentures, the dentist will take several molds of the mouth and oral structures. The molds are then sent to a laboratory where the shape, design and artificial teeth of the denture will be customized to fit the patient’s mouth. Once completed, the patient can try on a variety of different designs for the best fit and feel.

There are two types of dentures that we offer at Cedarwood Dental Care:

Removable complete dentures:

This type refers to dentures that are used by patients who are missing all of their teeth. A complete denture replaces all-natural teeth with a full set of artificial teeth. The appliance is removable and should be removed before sleeping. Complete dentures are a great option for patients who are missing all of their teeth because the procedure is not as invasive, timely, or expensive as dental implants.

Partial dentures:

This type refers to dentures that are used by patients who are only missing some of their teeth. These appliances are similar to dental bridges and are created to provide artificial teeth only where they are needed. Oftentimes, having artificial teeth to fill in the gaps will prevent the remaining teeth from shifting and maligning. Partial dentures are attached to remaining teeth but can also be removed when needed.
